Through its partnership with Soane Labs, Hawaii NanoSciences is organized in three companies each engaged in distinctly different industries. Beyond research and development, Hawaii NanoSciences commercializes, manufactures, sells and/or licenses the resulting products.

Nanostructured Consumer Products LLC focuses on materials for consumer-applied products such as laundry additives, auto and furniture polish, hard surface cleaners, and non-fluorinated textile repellency chemicals for household applications.

• Our stain resistant laundry additive can be applied to clothes via a fabric softener to deliver both softness and stain resistance. Water beads up and runs off treated clothing, and oil is more easily removed.

• Our technology for super hydrophobic surfaces modifies surfaces so that water droplets literally bounce off. The materials also become self-cleaning when the water hits, it picks up any dust or dirt and removes it. This so-called “lotus leaf effect” allows all sorts of surfaces – outdoor furniture, decks, camping equipment, and the like – to be protected from the elements.

NanoPaper LLC drives step-change innovations across a range of products in the pulp and paper industry. Our understanding of surface chemistry and molecular self-assembly allows us to enhance paper-making and coating processes in ways not achievable with traditional methods.

• Our grease-resistant paper coatings, made from environmentally friendly materials – containing no fluorine – make paper impervious to both water and oil.

• Our ultrathin release coatings for paper use our proprietary surface chemistry to allow manufacturers to cut back on the use of costly silicones.

• NanoPaper’s novel polymeric treatment radically increases tensile and tear strengths of papers, creating low-cost, high-performance renewable alternatives to high-end plastic films.

• For colored paper, our proprietary pigments strongly interact with pulp fibers, thereby eliminating the need for messy and inefficient dyes

Soane Energy LLC creates novel materials for the energy sector. We are commercializing products in both traditional as well as alternative fuel systems.

• Biodiesel is quickly becoming the premier alternative fuel with adoption worldwide and large government incentives. Our filtration technologies allow for faster production of biodiesel products to meet growing energy demands.

• Our smart extractant technology is used for environmental remediation for oil-contaminated waste products, such as in oil drilling, and petroleum recovery from nonconventional resources, such as in oil sands.
